Supervisors Network Meeting - Cannabis Workplace Safety for Employers

Since the legalization of Cannabis in Canada rules and rights in the workplace have changed. Old policies on illicit substances often no longer apply, creating new risks and situations that previously did not exist.

As an employer, you have the right to have a safe and effective workplace. This right must now co-exist with your employees’ rights to legally consume cannabis and be accommodated for its use related to medical conditions.

What is the right balance? What needs to be updated or changed in your substance use policies? How do you create cannabis safety programs and policies that are effective?

At this Supervisors Network meeting, we'll walk through an online WHMIS course that is clear and easy to understand and remember.

Employers will learn to:

  • Understand risk management and impairment management and the difference between the two
  • Explain the ineffective language of impairment in safely adapting to the legalization of cannabis
  • Understand and know the difference between effective and ineffective approaches to addressing employees’ consumption of cannabis
  • Understand that differences exist among federal, provincial, and local legislation/regulation regarding legal cannabis consumption
  • Recognize the most common problems and shortcomings in cannabis safety programs
  • Assess employers’ cannabis safety programs against the best practices
  • Access resources to improve programs and target issues in employers’ safety programs
  • Understand the most effective choice as an employer in a scenario about employees’ use of cannabis.

This network is open to all supervisors, directors, and administrators of licensed early learning and child care programs. Please note that registration is now necessary for all network meetings!

The ECDA has been supporting Directors and Supervisors for nearly ten years through the Supervisors Network. The intention of the group is to encourage open dialogue and knowledge exchange to enhance quality practices, such as human resource practices and policies, pedagogy and leadership.
