Workshop description:
When we think of education in its traditional sense, our mind turns to Numeracy and Literacy. However, the area of Social Emotional Learning, or SEL as it is referred to, plays an equally important role in a child’s educational trajectory. The transition of a child from pre-K to kindergarten and his or her engagement in learning is enhanced through the acquisition of SEL skills. Without this skill set, children find school very challenging. There is a strong correlation between lagging SEL skills and academic success. Taking turns, following directions, and paying attention are some examples of SEL skills that enable learning and success in and outside of the classroom. Pre K and K teachers often recognize the importance of social -emotional skills as a key measure of school readiness, and subsequently, success.
At the end of this interactive presentation, participants will have a clear understanding of Social Emotional Learning, specifically Self Awareness and Self Regulation. Varied classroom management skills will be discussed as well as research based resources to assist in its teaching, allowing for a smooth transition into the school system.
