This event has been approved by the Early Learning and Child Care Board for 3.00 professional development training hours.

Payment Policy:

The ECDA's payment policy for all Professional Development is that fees must be paid prior to attending*. The final date to make your payment is one week prior to the start date of the event, unless otherwise communicated (i.e. council or board run centres for cheque approval/signature, would be the exceptions). If payment is not received, before the event payment deadline, you will not be permitted to attend.

In the past, exceptions have been made by the ECDA, but with our growing membership, it has become increasingly difficult to manage. We thank you for your understanding and your commitment to your ongoing Professional Development. The ECDA.

*If you are mailing a cheque, please be aware you should allow a few days ahead of the deadline for it to be received by the ECDA office.

Provocations and Invitations; What Is Our Role As An Educator? with Kathleen Couture

Workshop Description: 

What is our role as an educator in a play-based curriculum? As we set up our classrooms, what materials should we be using to engage children in play, curiosity and exploration? How do we set up meaningful experiences that will allow children’s learning to reach new levels?

This workshop focuses on exploring provocations, their meaning, their purpose and the simplicity of the "how to". We will...

  • Discuss what the difference is between provocations and invitations, their set up, their meaning, and the possible natural outcomes that can be derived from such experiences.
  • Introduce the concept of how to tie the provocations to the five developmental domains of learning to use in our documentation.
  • Explore loose parts and how to use them in every area of your classroom and as well as how loose parts plays a huge role in the success of children’s learning.
  • Be able to see the direct correlation between provocations with emergent curriculum, inquiry-based teaching and scaffolding.
  • Discuss how provocations and invitations can be used for documentation, parent boards, children’s developmental assessments and program planning.

There will be time for hands-on experiences in exploring and creating provocations using simple readily available materials.

Facilitator Bio for Kathleen Couture:

I am an Early Childhood Educator, Director and Mentor for over 30 years. I have my Bachelor of Child Studies from Mount Saint Vincent University. I have worked across Canada and in the USA and have a vast knowledge of Early Childhood Education setting and classroom management. I have also been a foster parent of children dealing with trauma for over 9 years. Working with children who have experienced trauma and children with extreme behaviours is a passion of mine for many years. I come to you with knowledge, training and firsthand experience.
