What is a schema? Schemas are patterns of repeatable behavior that can be often observed in children’s play - sometimes an annoying or mystifying behavior/interest! (think of a baby dropping items – repeatedly from a high chair – or a four year old continually spinning wheels on a dinky car or throwing items across a room– even while you are talking with them!)
Children are fascinated with patterns (schemas) and are trying to learn more about the world around them. How do we identify a schema? How can we help children explore their schemas to enhance their learning? Research tells us that if we work with their schema(s) children begin to think more deeply and our work with children becomes more interesting and it is easier to program. In this workshop we will learn about the recognized schemas, and some strategies to use to help children further explore them and enhance their thinking.
Facilitator Bio:
Liz Hicks, elementary teacher from England, ECE diploma, 38 years in early childhood, in various capacities, and at present a private consultant working in early childhood education in NS, providing professional development in a variety of topics, environmental rating scales, also consultations and program coordination. I believe children are capable, curious and need to connect with people and the world around them, which is also a belief I have for the educators that work with the children. I believe in lifelong learning for all (especially myself!) and want to help educators provide the best environments and experiences for ALL children that encourage awe, wonder, learning and excitement in
discovery.
Please note: Participants will be given the link to the video and are required to participate in two ways-- with a microphone/built in speaker (such as the one built into your phone) and through chat.
