In this workshop we will explore the many ways that children's literacy education can be promoted through play. So often, educators are asked when they are going to start 'teaching' the children about their ABC's in preparation for school, but literacy is so much more than isolated pre-academic skills. It is during play that children learn the purpose of reading and writing which is the motivation for becoming literate. As children play, they discuss, debate, hypothesize, predict, engage, create, talk, and listen, all of which are literacy behaviours. During our time together we will take a further look at how literacy behaviours such as these can be facilitated within an early learning environment.
